Iran Risk Keeps Oil And Gold In Focus Over Weekend

Geopolitical risk dominated the weekend, with tanker strikes in the Strait of Hormuz, oil spills reaching the UAE coastline and warnings from Iran’s security chief that the nuclear weapons ban could be revisited keeping oil and gold in focus, while a drone-hit Russian refinery and renewed Black Sea strikes added further pressure on energy and wheat. With stock markets closed, crypto traded as the only open market, edging higher on light conviction: bitcoin added 0.46% to 77,793.95 and ether and solana also ticked up, even as the fear and greed index slipped to 34, Fear, well below last week’s levels. When markets reopen Monday, the focus shifts to a 452-company earnings slate led by Apple after the close, against a backdrop of Friday’s steep selloff in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, elevated consumer-credit stress readings in Canada and the US, and oil holding above $104 on the back of the unresolved Iran standoff.

Geopolitical

Iran remains the thread most relevant to markets this weekend. Tankers struck in the Strait of Hormuz, oil spills reaching the UAE coastline, and the security chief’s warning that Iran could revisit its nuclear weapons ban if war resumes all argue for continued upward pressure on oil and a safe-haven bid in gold, with shipping, airline and energy names exposed in both directions. The report that Iran is to receive Russian Su-35 jets once fighting ends points to a longer military build-up risk for the region, a slower variable for oil and defence stocks rather than an immediate mover. On Russia, a drone-hit refinery and renewed Black Sea strikes keep energy and wheat under pressure and support gold and the euro as a funding safe haven, while Erdogan’s call for a Black Sea truce is a diplomatic signal to watch, not a resolved risk. Separately, a US approval of Patriot missile sales to Ukraine, if delivered, would mark a real upgrade to its air defenses against Russian strikes. None of this points to de-escalation yet.

Crypto

Crypto is the only market open this weekend, and it is edging higher without much conviction behind the move. Bitcoin trades at 77,793.95, up 0.46% from Friday’s close, with Ethereum at 2,267.53 (up 0.66%) and Solana at 95.67 (up 0.38%). Sentiment has not caught up with the price action: the fear and greed index reads 34, Fear, down sharply from the 48-to-51 range seen just four days ago. Bitcoin dominance holds near 59.3%, and the market outside bitcoin and ether is essentially flat, up only 0.19% to $0.80 trillion, so altcoins are not driving this. The more durable support is institutional rather than technical: JPMorgan has put out its first long-term bitcoin return forecast at 10% annually while flagging volatility as a lasting hurdle to adoption, HSBC has rolled out its first stablecoin to a large app user base, and Polygon and Solana are teaming up on bank stablecoin payments. None of it has been enough to lift sentiment out of Fear.

Other Significant Events

Monday’s reopen brings a heavy earnings slate, 452 companies in all, led by Apple (AAPL) after the close alongside Clorox (CLX), Corteva (CTVA), IFF and Match Group (MTCH), with pre-market reports due from Estee Lauder (EL), CDW, Entergy (ETR) and Kenvue (KVUE). No economic releases or speeches are scheduled.

Consumer-credit stress stays a watch item into the reopen: Canada’s score is 62 out of 100, elevated, versus 54 in the US, both flagging rising delinquency and a recession signal on watch. First Cash (FCFS), Credit Acceptance (CACC) and EZCORP (EZPW) are the weakest names in the basket, with OppFi (OPRT) the offsetting gainer. In Canadian income names, Allied Properties (AP-UN.TO) and BTB (BTB-UN.TO) screen as the most dislocated on yield against the 10-year Government of Canada bond at 3.88%, with RioCan (SRU-UN.TO) and H&R (HR-UN.TO) showing more moderate gaps worth tracking alongside the Iran-driven oil moves.
