Kospi Surge Leads Split Asia Open as US Futures Soften

Wall Street closed broadly higher, with the S&P 500 up 0.59%, the Nasdaq up 1.06%, the Dow up 0.68% and the TSX up 0.62%, but that strength has not carried into futures, which are pointing modestly lower. After the bell, Westrock Coffee completed an upsized $600 million credit facility refinancing, StorageVault reported third-quarter revenue, NOI and AFFO growth alongside a dividend increase, and GeoPark priced a $550,000,000 senior notes offering, while Xtract One released full-year results. Asia looks set to open in fragmented fashion as a result: Japan’s Nikkei is indicated firmer, Korea’s Kospi stands out with a sharp 3.73% indicated gain, and China’s benchmarks along with Australia’s ASX 200 are pointing lower. With S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures both softer and the region split along familiar lines, the session ahead looks set to be selective rather than uniform.

Asia Open

Wall Street’s broad gain has not carried through into futures, and that hesitation is the backdrop for Asia’s open. The region itself looks split along familiar lines rather than following a single direction. Japan is indicated firmer, with the Nikkei 225 at 64,621.24, up 0.91%, keeping pace with the stronger side of global risk appetite. Korea is the outlier to watch: the Kospi is indicated up 3.73% at 5,735.66, a move far larger than anything else in the region and one that invites scrutiny over whether it holds once trading actually opens or gives some of it back. China and Australia pull the other way, with the Hang Seng indicated down 0.90% at 23,651.87, the Shanghai Composite off 0.53% at 3,713.03, and the ASX 200 down 0.63% at 8,775.60.

Beyond the index moves, the geopolitical backdrop offers little reassurance. Reporting on Ukraine suggests the US diplomatic push has not brought peace closer, with Putin described as feeling no pressure to end the war, a reminder that diplomatic activity and conflict intensity are running on separate tracks. In Yemen, a mass funeral for 75 recruits killed in the Houthi strike on a training camp confirms the scale of that incident and points to continued escalation in that theater. Neither item has a quantified market reaction yet, but both argue for caution on any assumption that calm headlines mean calm markets. With futures soft and the region fragmented, Asia looks set for a selective, name-by-name session rather than a uniform move.

After-Hours Company News

A handful of after-hours releases carried figures worth acting on, set against a Wall Street session that closed broadly higher. Westrock Coffee completed an upsized $600 million five-year credit facility refinancing, extending its debt runway and giving the company more flexibility on its balance sheet. StorageVault posted YTD revenue growth of 9.0%, NOI up 8.7% and AFFO up 7.8% for the third quarter of 2026, and raised its dividend, a combination that points to steady operating momentum alongside a direct return of cash to shareholders. Xtract One released its fiscal 2026 fourth quarter and full year results, adding to the evening’s earnings news.

On financing, GeoPark priced an offering of $550,000,000 in 9.500% senior notes due 2033, locking in long-dated funding at that coupon. Birchtree Investments announced a non-brokered subscription receipt financing alongside an amendment to its Digital Motion share exchange agreement and a loan to Digital Motion, tying new financing to a corporate restructuring step. AirBoss confirmed it will release third quarter 2026 earnings on November 4, giving investors a date to watch into next month.

The remainder of the batch, including Helus Pharma’s investor presentation, Kane’s market maker engagement and other routine corporate notices, carried no new figures or deal terms and offers little for positioning ahead of the Asia open.

Tomorrow Morning Watch

  • USD Unemployment Claims: Thu 08:30 ET, forecast 200K. This is the main scheduled test in the morning. A beat can keep pressure on rates and support equities, while a miss can ease Treasury yields and help stocks extend the broad risk-on tone seen in the US close.
  • S&P 500 futures: back above 7,778.75. Futures are slightly lower even after a strong cash close, so reclaiming the prior settlement would show the pullback is fading. Failure to recover that level keeps the overnight tone cautious and leaves the Asia split in focus.
  • Nasdaq futures: back above 29,919.75. The Nasdaq led the US session, but futures are softer now, so this is the line that would confirm the tech bid is still intact. If it cannot retake that level, the market may treat the opening strength in risk assets as fragile.
  • Kospi: holds above 5,735.66. Korea is the clear outlier in Asia, with the Kospi indicated sharply higher. Holding above that level would confirm the move has follow-through; losing it would suggest the opening surge was overdone.
  • WTI crude: below 98. WTI is off after the prior close and sits just under the key round number. A break lower would add to the softer commodities tone already visible in copper and natural gas, while a rebound would signal firmer inflation pressure.
